It’s the annoying part of travel we all like to push to the back of our minds until it comes time to pack…airport security.  I’m going to leave out my personal thoughts and feelings on the subject and focus on how to help you work with the TSA agents to get you through and on to your flight as smoothly as possible.

First I suggest making things smoother on yourself and your fellow passengers by packing as lightly as possible.  See my earlier post, Packing tips – apparel for some ideas on how to pack lighter.  This will mean less for you to carry around, less for those around you to have to wait for you to collect, AND the less security has to riffle through possibly causing you to miss your flight.  It does now cost on most airlines to check luggage but it is so much easier to get through security if you’re able to fly on an airline that doesn’t charge or are OK with paying the baggage fee.

Carry on only what is necessary so there is less for you to be questioned on.  Something to read, travel itinerary and confirmations, a snack.  NO LIQUIDS.  Also, whenever possible I wear flip flops when traveling.  Easy on, easy off.  I pack a pair of socks in my carry on to keep my feet warm during the flight.  Keep your boarding pass and ID out and in your hand until you are completely through security.

Your best bet is going to be to check the TSA website http://www.tsa.gov/ before your trip as specific restrictions can change quite often.  The general site will be able to connect you to all sorts of useful information on moving through security with relative ease.  They do also have  a list of prohibited items that is updated frequently and can be found here http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/prohibited/permitted-prohibited-items.shtm.
