On the Big Island we stayed in the resort area of Kona (aka Kailua, Kailua-Kona).  We opted for condo accommodations given the expense of…well everything on the island.  It was nice to have a kitchen to cook and warm up left overs.   We booked through Delta Vacations which I don’t know that I can recommend wholeheartedly.  But I can recommend staying in the Royal Sea Cliff condos.

The condo was a two bedroom with it’s own lanai and ocean view.  It is on the ocean but not on a beach.  Beach front is hard to find on the Big Island because it is still a young island with a lot of lava.  There are two pools and covered parking included with your rental.  Each unit also has a washer and dryer which we did find convenient so that we didn’t have to put overly wet or sandy clothes into our suitcase.  The furnishings in our unit were simple but comfortable.  Fans and a well designed structure meant we could open the windows and not use the air conditioning.

Now there is one caveat to recommending this place.  It depends on what your main focus will be on your trip.  If you are looking for relaxation, shopping, and restaurants then Kona is the area for you.  If however (like us) you are more interested in hiking, visiting Volcano National Park, and waterfalls then I would recommend finding a place in Hilo otherwise you end up spending too much time in your car.
