On our way back north from Big Sur, we spent the night in Carmel by the Sea.  Carmel is a beautiful town just south of Monterey.  It’s an inspiring location that many artists have gravitated to over the years.  The area is lush with vegetation; everything from Impatients to Bird of Paradise. Big Sur is the most beautiful place I have ever been to.  When I visited the Grand Canyon and surrounding region it took my breath away but Big Sur stole my heart.  It is a coastal region in central California that is not so clearly defined and is sparsely populated. (more…)

From the Road: Fernwood Resort

We checked in to the Fernwood Resort upon arrival in the Big Sur area.  I have to say the term “resort” should be taken lightly.  It’s more in line with what most would associate with a motel.  They have individual cabins in the woods, a restaurant, bar, and small general store along with several motel rooms.  There are a couple other “resorts” in the area with a similar layout. From the Road: The PCH

We took off down the Pacific Coast Highway (aka The PCH, aka California 1) for the area of Big Sur.  There are numerous turn outs which they call Vista Points along the route where you can stop to take in the impressive views….impressive isn’t even the right word.  Quite frankly the adjectives to describe the beauty of the coastline don’t yet exist. From the Road: First Night at a Holiday Inn Express

The flight out to San Francisco was long and mostly uneventful with the exception of the guy sitting next to us making me nervous with his jitteriness.…turns out he was just jonesing for a smoke; quite the relief.  Flying over the Rocky Mountains was the highlight of the 4 hour 23 minute flight.  Delta had us on time from gate to gate.  (more…)
